Classic was what you were to me
Your life before we met was full of bull
The whites of your eyes so scary
My heartstrings were your donkeys to pull.
****
You gave me with Donquixote such pleasure
Every-time you donkeys ee-yored
Between you both three treasures
I hope you know you were adored.
****
Sassy, Anastassia and Precious too
All will live on because of you
Buried in the apple orchard
No longer sick and tortured.
****
Your hooves grew long, faster than the rest
Your nose needed zinc
You were such a pain in the ass, a pest
More work than you'd think.
****
Not for a moment do I regret
For five years gone so fast
The day I decided for me a donkey for a pet
But I thought your little family would last and last.
****
You got so thin, your legs covered in scabs
You ate alright, so I thought you were fine
But the tests said no from the labs
How could this happen to a pet of mine.
****
Thank-you for choosing your own time to die
Because I was having a hard time to decide
Your life was so special to me
So I hope you are able to run free.
****
We are all glad that you are here at home
Where your human family can ponder
About how you donkeys feel about your own
I hope you were comfortable to the last, I will always wonder.
****
You bit my finger you rolled your eyes
My scary girl I really tried
You rolled and got dirty your hair a mess
So much more needy than the rest.
****
I hope that nothing I did or didn't do
Was to blame for the shortness of your life
I was looking forward to many more years of strife
We got so close when I was trying to save you.
****
The orchard was always a favourite place
Naughty you all were my family of asses
Your braying echoing around hill face to hill face
A donkey family to the end until one passes.
****
No pretence just true to form
A real original a Classic
Even though you were just the norm
A joy, a heartbreak more than basic.
****
I am sorry your day had to come at nine
Like all things, so sad before your time
Your family two legs and four, will remember you
And me, well I'll shed a tear or two.
*******************
Donquixote, it has taken a long time to add this for you
I could not believe it when you died too
Your head went down, I thought you mourned
Only twenty years since you were born.
****
Your head swelled up, it swayed from side to side
I stayed by your side through the night and cried and cried
I knew I couldn't let you suffer it was so quick
I didn't even know you were sick.
****
Your eyes were filled with bloody tears
The pressure so great in your head it must have pounded
Your tongue so swollen, you couldn't bear
To eat or drink, was harder than it sounded.
****
The vet came when I rang and shook her head
The same illness as Classic she said
How, said I the symptoms are not the same
Bull farming and ragwort were to blame.
****
We gave you some drugs to ease the swelling and pain
Sent bloods to be analysed, they must be wrong
Never had ragwort, I said again and again
I've had them five years how could it have taken so long.
****
You were everything I thought of when I thought donkey
I only have one now, and I love her to death
Her sister Sassy may come home now shortly
With boyfriend in tow, hopefully all in good health.
****
Precious is so lonely being the only one
As I look out my window where you and Classic lie
In the orchard that you both loved and where you died
I didn't know donkeys could be such fun
****
Silly donkeys so comical and hard-case
With long ears and funny looking face
I've had such joy and heartache this year
But you are both in my heart, never fear.
